Before - standard shipping container
After - fantastic contemporary home
What
An innovative solution to building on what are known as 'infill' plots - small pieces of land that are often found in between larger development sites, that are generally considered to be unusable. The solution - a standard shipping container, sunk into the ground, to form a compact vertical tower. Projections are formed from the basic shell to create additional usable space. The structure is super insulated and is a low cost way of getting onto the property ladder.
Who for
Design competition set by the NRW Forum in Dusseldorf.
Biggest challenge
Creating enough space to live in a tiny footprint of 2.4m x 2.4m.
The best bit
Two things - the idea to 'stick' it in the ground and create a vertical tower, and the cantilevered projections which look great and provide just enough additional space to make the design work.
