The proposed refurbishment of the Flying Horse walk shopping arcade in Nottingham has been granted Planning approval. Designed by the Heterarchy team, the refurbishment will further strengthen the Flying Horse Walk as the shopping arcade for independent and boutique retailers within Nottingham. The aim of the design scheme is to re-establish the historic, period character of this landmark site, whilst giving it a contemporary twist – entirely in keeping with the caliber of tennants, which includes Vivienne Westwood and The Cheese Shop.

The refurbishment includes work to the interior of the arcade as well as both facades, bringing back the iconic Flying Horse as a symbol of the strength and diversity of the retail economy in Nottingham.

Work has recently commenced on site for the new flagship student lettings office in Loughborough for Loc8me. Designed by the Heterarchy studio, we worked closely with the Loc8me team to develop a concept that was in line with their innovative and creative approach to student lettings. Converting what was previously a used car showroom, the interior design juxtaposes angular and geometric elements with the raw character of the shell. Completed in late 2011, the new restaurant and dining facility at the Ashorne Hill training and conference venue in Warwickshire is proving to be a huge success. Transforming what was a 1970′s extension to the main Grade II Listed building, the key aim of the design was to create a restaurant interior that is contemporary yet feels like a natural progression from the Great Hall within the historic building.

We’re delighted with the finished result of our ’60 Hour Makeover’ for the 2011 Thomas May Executive Quest, where we completely transformed the interior of the childrens room in the LOROS bookshop on Queens Road in Leicester into a magical woodland room with toad stool seats and astro-turf flooring. Alongside carrying out the work within our target of 60 hours we also managed to raise almost £2000 for LOROS and Prostaid, so a huge thank you for everyone who kindly donated.

Special thanks must also go to the companies that kindly donated all of the building materials - EH Smith builders merchant, Johnstones Leyland paints, Next, Harrison Surfacing, PCF Displays, Paul Hunt Woodworking and Fullsquare for printing and graphics.

The room has been a complete hit with the bookshops younger clientele, creating a space that will hopefully drive more sales of childrens books and help to raise even more money for LOROS. We were only too happy make our contribution to these two worthy causes, even though the (very long) weekend we spent was quite a grueling undertaking!

We’re delighted with the recently completed private members lounge at the Regency Hotel in South Kensington. It’s been well received by the client, the hotels guests as well as getting some great coverage in the press. Providing an added value facility for the hotels premium clientele, it includes an ‘honesty bar’, discreet technology with concealed power and connectivity for laptops and AV equipment. This new private members lounge is helping the hotel in the ever increasing competitive landscape of London hotel and hospitality venues. The overall feel of the interior is a warm, intimate and contemporary space.

This weekend myself and the Heterarchy crew will be creating this fantastic children’s reading room for a Loros bookshop in Leicester. It’s part of a challenge I’m taking part in, the Thomas May Executive Quest, which gets CEO’s, MD’s and business leaders within the Leicester area to do something crazy to raise money for Prostaid and Loros.

We’re starting at 8pm on Friday night, to be completed by 8am on the Monday morning! Materials for the build have been kindly donated by EH Smith builders merchant, Johnstones Leyland paints, Next, Harrison Surfacing, PCF Displays, Paul Hunt Woodworking and Fullsquare for printing and graphics.

Work has recently completed on a contemporary apartment interior in Leicestershire. The apartment is within a converted 1970′s office building – an unusual building type to convert to residential, however the results are entirely successful. With bold use of colour, interesting wall-art and a beautiful cast resin floor, the apartment interior design is cool and contemporary, whilst also being comfortable and practical. The Heterarchy studio is currently looking for a graduate intern Creative Design Technician. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, be methodical, organised, a good communicator, with excellent skills on Autocad and Adobe software. You will need to have a BA in interiors, furniture or equivalent qualification.

The role will involve working as an integral part of the creative team. Your responsibilities will focus on taking initial interior design concepts and developing them into workable design solutions. This will include producing technical/CAD drawings, details for bespoke furniture, joinery items and construction. Training will be given to develop your knowledge of the technical aspects of design. You will also be required to work with the design team on other aspects of a project, such as producing final presentations.

The start date for the position is the 3rd October. Following the recent completion of the bar design for Nosh in Rugby, work is due to commence on site. With sculpted croc panels on the front of the bar, simple cubic shelving to the rear and LED lighting throughout, the end result will be as effective as it affordable. The bar is due for completion by the beginning of September. Keep an eye out for photographs to be added to our project gallery once it is completed.
